Emissions

chart

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, greenhouse gas from beef cattle only represented 2.3% of emissions in the U.S in 2022.

Found on US EPA 1990-2022 Report: Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2022, updated 04/2024 (epa.gov).

Total U.S. emissions for 2022 (bottom Table ES-2): 6,343.2 MMT CO2 eq.

Beef Cattle Emissions for 2022:

  1. CH4 emissions from enteric fermentation (Table 5-3): 137.0 MMT CO2 Eq
  2. CH4 emissions from manure management (Table 5-6): 4.3 MMT CO2 Eq
  3. N2O emissions from manure management (Table 5-6): 6.4 MMT COEq

Total beef cattle emissions in 2022: 137.0 + 4.3 + 6.4 = 147.7 MMT COEq

(147.7 MMT COEq / 6,343.2 MMT COEq) = 0.0232 MMT CO2 Eq  or 2.32% (rounded to 2.3% if rounding to the nearest tenth, or 2% if rounding to nearest whole number)

chart

Total GHG emissions from U.S. beef production (cradle to grave) = 3.8%

Calculations: In the Putman et al., 2023 life cycle assessment, total GHG emissions from beef production (cradle to grave) are calculated as 249.8 Tg CO2e.

[In 2017] 42.7 kg CO2e per kg beef x 5.85 Tg beef produced and consumed = 249.8 Tg CO2e.

*Note: Tg is equivalent to million metric tons (MMT)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) GHG Inventory reports total U.S. GHG emissions in 2017 were 6561.8 MMT CO2e.

249.8 MMT CO2e / 6561.8 MMT CO2e = 3.8%
